What is Movesmith? Movesmith is a removals booking platform where customers across the UK can submit move details and receive a fixed price; booking proceeds after suitable local or route-based operator capacity is confirmed.

Moving in Southwark — riverside warehouses, regeneration sites and 31 parking zones

The river end of the borough is SE1: Bankside, Borough and Bermondsey, where Butler's Wharf and the other riverside warehouses along Shad Thames were converted into flats and offices. These buildings bring shared entrances, courtyards and goods lifts, and the streets around them carry long parking-control hours. In Bankside's zone the controls run every day from 8am to 11pm, so an evening or Sunday move there still needs planning.

Elephant and Castle and Walworth are mid-regeneration. The former Heygate estate has been replaced by Elephant Park, and the Aylesbury Estate is being rebuilt in phases, with homes under construction at the corner of Portland Road and Albany Road and the next phase planned along Thurlow Street. Moving into a new block here usually means a booked slot and a named loading point, which the operator needs to know about in advance. Elephant Park alone is planned at around 3,000 new homes, so expect hoardings and changing footpaths.

Further south, Camberwell, East Dulwich and Dulwich Village include Streetspace traffic schemes, where bollards, planters or cameras stop through-traffic, so the van's approach is planned street by street. Peckham and Rotherhithe have their own Movesmith pages; this one covers the rest of Southwark. Southwark had the highest social housing proportion in England at the 2011 census, 43.7 per cent, so estate lifts and walkways shape many moves across the borough.

Before you move in Southwark

  • Know your zone's hours

Southwark zone hours range from a two-hour weekday window in Herne Hill to 8am to 11pm every day in Bankside. A Sunday or evening move is only easier if your zone actually switches off.

  • Seven days, and five to cancel

Southwark wants seven days' notice for a suspension, and there is no refund on the daily charges if you cancel within five days of the start. Changing dates carries a separate admin fee.

  • North over London Bridge

From SE1 it is a short hop across London Bridge or Tower Bridge into the City or Tower Hamlets. Congestion Charge time on those routes is shown as its own line before you book.

  • Red lines mean no loading

Southwark does not allow loading on red lines during their operational hours. If your door is on a red-line stretch, the crew will use a marked loading box or the nearest side street instead.

  • Longer than 40 minutes on a yellow line

When the van needs to stay on a yellow line beyond the 40-minute loading allowance, Southwark offers a waiting restriction dispensation, charged per day and arranged through the same suspension page as bay suspensions.

Moving in Southwark: parking, access & local know-how

The practical detail that shapes a Southwark move — so your operator turns up ready, not guessing.

Parking & permits
Southwark has 31 controlled parking zones covering about 60% of the borough, and the hours vary widely: Bermondsey's zone G runs 8.30am to 11pm every day, while Herne Hill's is noon to 2pm on weekdays. Bays can be suspended online for a removal van with seven days' notice. The council's page lists a non-refundable admin fee plus a daily charge per car space (Sep 2026), and daily charges are not refunded if you cancel less than five days ahead. Tell us your zone and we will say whether the job needs one.Southwark parking suspensions ↗
ULEZ & emissions
North Southwark sits inside the Congestion Charge zone, roughly north of Tower Bridge Road, New Kent Road and Elephant and Castle, which takes in Borough and Bankside — check TfL's zone map for your address. Any charge appears as a separate line in your quote; the London-wide ULEZ is handled by the operator and is not passed on to you.
Local housing
SE1 mixes riverside warehouse conversions at Butler's Wharf and Shad Thames with council estates north of the Old Kent Road. Elephant and Castle's pre-war Victorian streets were badly bombed and later rebuilt as estates, now being redeveloped again as Elephant Park and the new Aylesbury. Bermondsey's former Peek Freans site is being redeveloped into 1,600 new homes.
Streets & access
  • The Aylesbury Estate's construction sites around Portland Road, Albany Road and Thurlow Street can close footways and change the route to a block, so check the current entrance before moving day.
  • Streetspace filters at Dulwich Village, East Dulwich and Champion Hill, Walworth, Bermondsey Street and Great Suffolk Street use bollards, planters or cameras to stop through-traffic.
  • Tower Bridge Road, the Old Kent Road and the roads through Elephant and Castle are main routes; Southwark's guidance says most single red lines restrict loading from 7am to 7pm and double red lines all day.
  • In controlled hours you can load on a pay-and-display or permit bay for up to 20 minutes, and on yellow lines for up to 40 minutes if the activity is constant, which covers a small collection but rarely a flat move.
  • Tower Bridge Road, New Kent Road and Elephant and Castle form the southern edge of the Congestion Charge zone, so two addresses a few streets apart can be charged differently; check TfL's zone map for yours.
Moving-day tips
In a Shad Thames warehouse, ask the building manager about goods-lift bookings and which door vans can use. For a new-build at Elephant Park or the Aylesbury, get the loading-bay slot and the concierge contact in writing, and share them when you book. On an older estate with walkways, say which stair or lift is closest to the road.

Southwark removals — straight answers

Common questions on local moves, pricing and how Movesmith works.

How much is a man and van in Southwark?

Small jobs such as a single item or a few boxes start from £165 and the price is fixed before booking. Common Southwark jobs include a studio out of a Bermondsey warehouse flat, a desk and bed from an Elephant and Castle new-build, or a few items from a Camberwell house-share to storage. The fixed price accounts for the goods lift, the floor and the walk from the van.

Can I book fixed-price removals in Southwark?

Yes. Your Southwark quote is fixed from the details you give, and access is built into it: the goods lift in a Shad Thames conversion, the concierge slot at an Elephant Park block, or the stairs in a Dulwich house. Verified moving operators who cover Southwark carry out the job, and the price does not change if the day matches your details.

Where can a removal van park in Southwark?

That depends on your zone. Southwark has 31 CPZs across about 60% of the borough, some running until 11pm every day. The council lets you suspend bays online to reserve space for a removal van, with seven days' notice, and a yellow warning notice goes up before it starts. Outside a suspension, loading on a bay is limited to 20 minutes during controlled hours, which is rarely enough for a flat.

Are the moving operators for Southwark moves verified?

Yes. Movesmith checks identity, Goods in Transit and Public Liability documents, records the declared vehicle type and requires a vehicle-compliance declaration before an operator takes bookings. We do not claim to physically inspect vehicles.

What affects the price of a move in Southwark?

In Southwark the price moves with goods-lift access in riverside conversions, booked loading slots at regeneration blocks, estate walkways and lifts, Congestion Charge time for SE1 addresses north of New Kent Road and Tower Bridge Road, and whether a suspension is needed in your zone. Beyond those, the price reflects distance, how much you are moving, any packing and your chosen date.

What happens after I request a quote?

You see your fixed price straight away. Confirm with protected payment and we match your Southwark move with a verified moving operator. A received booking isn't operator acceptance; we confirm your operator separately when they accept.

What if something is damaged?

Movesmith shows the applicable liability terms before you book. Your declared goods value helps us match the move with a suitable verified moving operator. Report from your booking page within 7 days of completion — including damage you couldn't reasonably spot at delivery.

What parking and access details do I need to provide?

Tell us separately about pickup and delivery: choose where the van can park lawfully, then give the carry distance, floor, lift, stairs and any awkward access. A private driveway or unrestricted street selection is enough by itself. For permit-controlled, paid or loading-bay parking, also give who is arranging it, whether it is confirmed, its operating window and the exact lawful position. Unknown or unsupported access is reviewed before we offer a fixed price, and a carry of 50 metres or more needs a tailored review. Do not enter gate codes, passwords or access credentials in the booking.

What happens if parking or access is different on moving day?

If there is no lawful parking, furniture does not fit, access is unsafe, unplanned dismantling is needed or delivery cannot be completed, the operator pauses the affected work and sends Movesmith a structured report with evidence. The operator cannot invent a charge or take cash at the door. Movesmith reviews the facts and, if the job needs to change, sends you a fixed proposal. Extra work or payment happens only after you expressly approve it; if you reject it, there is no variation charge and Ops arranges the safe next step, rebooking or a fresh quote.
