Our liability to you

Clear liability terms, shown before you book.

Your contract is with Movesmith Ltd — not with the moving operator who carries out your move. Every move includes Movesmith Cover up to £10,000 — with increased cover up to £50,000 available when you declare a higher value. Loss or damage is handled by us. Here's what that means, and what is and isn't covered, before you confirm.

What Movesmith Cover includes

  • Up to £10,000 per move included at no extra cost — and when you declare a higher value, increased Movesmith Cover (to £25,000 or £50,000) is added automatically and priced in your fixed quote before payment.
  • Up to the value you declare. Your declared value sets the ceiling for any claim, so declare honestly — it's recorded in your confirmation email with the Terms you accepted.
  • Repair or current market value. If something is damaged, we put it right based on the cost to repair it, or what the item is worth today — not a brand-new (new-for-old) replacement.
  • Above £50,000? We arrange a bespoke quote and the right cover before your move goes ahead — just request a quote.

How your declared value works

When you book, you declare what your goods are worth. That figure helps us assess your move, match the right verified moving operator, and identify whether a bespoke quote is needed — so declare honestly. Individual items worth over £8,000— plus antiques, fine art, pianos and safes — should be declared at booking so we can confirm the right handling and cover. It's all recorded in your confirmation email along with the Terms you accepted, which set out the liability terms in full.

What's generally not covered

  • Cash, jewellery, watches, precious metals, original documents, or items of exceptional sentimental value — please carry these yourself
  • High-value items that should have been declared but weren't, or value above the band you declared
  • Damage caused by inadequate packing where you packed the items yourself and the damage relates directly to packing standards
  • Pre-existing damage (photographed at pickup before the move starts)
  • Consequential losses — e.g. business interruption, accommodation costs from a delayed move

Nothing here limits your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Higher-value moves

If your move includes high-value or specialist items — art, antiques, instruments, a high-value contents profile — the instant booking flow isn't always the right fit. Request a bespoke quoteand we'll come back within 2 working hours so we can confirm the right moving operator, handling plan, and the terms that apply.

If something goes wrong

  1. Your moving operator photographs your goods at pickup and delivery — it's built into our app, so the evidence exists before you ever need it.
  2. Tell us anytime. For the fastest resolution, report within 7 days of completion from your booking page. Your statutory rights are unaffected.
  3. We acknowledge within 4 working hours, investigate within 3 working days, and aim to resolve within 21 working days.
  4. We'll put it right under the liability terms that applied to your booking. We deal with the moving operator separately — that's never your problem.
