When does my card actually get charged?
Your card is saved with Stripe at the time of booking — no funds are charged or held at this stage.
When your operator is confirmed for your move (typically 24 to 48 hours before the move date), your card is authorised: funds equal to your quote are reserved by Stripe but not yet charged.
Payment is captured when your operator marks the move complete. Your bank statement will show a charge from "Movesmith".
If the move doesn't happen, the authorisation is released and you're not charged.
What if the supplier doesn't turn up?
Full refund, plus a £75 credit toward your next move, plus we scramble to reassign you the same day. The operator faces reliability consequences on their account, handled under our supplier reliability framework.
Can I cancel if my plans change?
Yes. Free cancellation if you cancel 48 or more hours before your move.
Closer to the day there's a fee — 50% at 24–48h, 75% in the last 24 hours, 100% if you're a no-show — because your operator has already blocked the day for you. Full breakdown on the cancellation page.
What's included in the price?
A verified crew, a suitably-sized van, loading + driving + unloading, clear liability terms based on the details you declare at booking, and any Congestion Charge or Dartford Crossing that applies to your route.
Extras (full packing, piano, dismantling, evening/weekend, stairs) are opt-in on step 2 of the quote — you pick what you need.
How are operators approved?
Before activation, every operator must provide valid Goods in Transit and Public Liability insurance, confirm their base postcode and vehicle type, and acknowledge that the vehicles they use for Movesmith jobs are roadworthy and legally compliant. Suppliers remain responsible for ongoing vehicle compliance.
After activation, we monitor reliability, communication and completion quality. Repeated reliability issues (late cancellations, no-shows) affect access to jobs and can lead to removal from the platform.
What if my route crosses the Congestion Zone or Dartford Crossing?
We detect those automatically when you enter your postcodes and show each charge as a separate line item on your quote. Movesmith takes £0 commission on regulatory charges — they go 100% to your operator, who pays them on the day.
Do you do long-distance moves?
Yes, anywhere in the UK. Moves over 100 miles need a custom quote because fuel, overnight stays, and regulatory crossings vary too widely for a fixed price. Fill out the long-distance form and we'll come back within 2 hours with a quote and a secure payment link.
Where are you based and how far do you go?
