Most removals firms quote a number and reserve the right to revise it. We publish ours, including every add-on, so you can work out your price before you speak to anyone. What you see at the end of booking is what you pay.

Prices start from the figures below. For flats, the floor is already built into the price — there is no separate stairs charge, because carrying everything up and down is the job.

Single items and small loads

One sofa, a mattress, a marketplace pickup or a small man-and-van load. These price differently from a whole home: the job is short, so access is a much larger share of the work — which is why stairs and carry distance are charged here and not on a house move.

Road charges, passed through at cost

If your move crosses the Congestion Charge zone, a ULEZ boundary, the Dartford Crossing or a tolled tunnel, that charge appears as its own line in your quote at the rate the authority charges on the day. It is detected from your postcodes rather than left for you to spot.

Movesmith takes no commission on any of them. They go to the operator in full, because they are the one paying on the day. Current rates are set by TfL and the crossing operators, so we link rather than quote a figure that would go stale: current TfL charges.

What we never do

  • Charge by the hour, so a slow day never becomes your bill.
  • Revise the price after the job because it took longer than expected.
  • Add a fee on the day for stairs, parking or access you already told us about.
  • Take a cut of the Congestion Charge, ULEZ or a toll.

The one thing that does change a price is the job changing — significantly more to move than you described, or access you did not mention. In that case the operator contacts Movesmith before loading and we agree any change with you first, rather than presenting it afterwards.

Pricing questions

Are Movesmith's prices really fixed?

Yes. You see the full price — base price plus every add-on that applies to your move — before you book, and that is the price charged. Nothing is added afterwards for a job that took longer or turned out to have more stairs than expected.

Why does a second-floor flat cost more than a ground-floor one?

Because it takes longer and needs more people. Carrying a flat's contents up and down stairs is the single biggest variable in a small move, so it is built into the price for flats rather than added as a surprise. A 1-bed flat is priced from £420 on the ground floor and from £520 on the second floor or above.

Do stairs cost extra on a house move?

Not as a separate line. For flats, the floor level is already reflected in the base price. For houses, the base price assumes normal access. The per-flight stairs charges on this page apply to single items and small man-and-van loads, where one awkward staircase makes a much bigger proportional difference.

What happens if the van can't park outside?

For single items and small loads there is a carry-distance charge — £15 for 10–25 metres and £35 for 25–50 metres. Tell us about access when you book and it is priced in up front rather than raised on the day.

Do you add commission to the Congestion Charge or ULEZ?

No. Congestion Charge, ULEZ, Dartford Crossing and tunnel tolls are passed through at cost as separate line items, and paid in full to the operator who actually pays them on the day. Movesmith takes nothing on them.

Is the price per hour?

No. Movesmith prices the job, not the hour. That means a slow day is our operator's problem to plan for, not an unexpected bill for you — and it is why the things that make a job slower, like stairs and carry distance, are priced in at the start.
