What is Movesmith? Movesmith is a removals booking platform where customers across the UK can submit move details and receive a fixed price; booking proceeds after suitable local or route-based operator capacity is confirmed.
Moving in Chelmsford, the county town
Chelmsford is the county town of Essex, about 31 miles north-east of Charing Cross and 22 miles south-west of Colchester, with around 110,600 people in the built-up area in 2021. Its suburbs include Springfield, Moulsham, Great Baddow, Broomfield, Writtle and Widford.
It is a commuter city: about 14,000 people take the train to Liverpool Street each day. If you are moving to be nearer the station, the example prices below for a move from CM1 to CM2 give a feel for a short hop across the city.
By road the city is served by the A12 and the A414, and the nearest motorway is the M25 at junction 11 of the A12, about 14 miles away. Routes to Basildon, Colchester and east London are priced below.

Parking and highway rules change, so each note links to the official page it was checked against.
Parking is run by the South Essex Parking Partnership
On-street parking in Chelmsford is enforced by the South Essex Parking Partnership (SEPP), which Chelmsford City Council runs. SEPP issues digital resident permits and visitor tickets.

SEPP can suspend permit, limited-waiting and pay-and-display bays. Apply at least 15 working days ahead; the fee is paid in advance and is not refundable, and the council says it cannot promise the bays will be clear.

A SEPP dispensation permit lets a working vehicle park on yellow lines and in some bays, but only 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and never where there is a loading ban. It is written for tradespeople, so check it fits your move before relying on it.

Resident and visitor permits are bought through MiPermit. If you have just moved in, the council can set up your account with proof of residency such as a tenancy agreement or a recent utility bill.

Permit streets near the centre
Several streets around the centre are resident-permit areas, and homes built after 1 April 2009 in Chelmsford can't get resident permits at all. Check which applies at each end before the day, so the van has somewhere lawful to stop.
Station-side flats
If your flat has a shared entrance or a walk from the road, tell the quote the floor, the lift and the walking distance, and they are priced in rather than argued about on the day.
Villages around the city
Moving out to Writtle, Boreham or a CM3 village? Say how close a van can get to the door and whether the lane suits a smaller van.
Picking a date
Choose your date in the quote and the price shown is for that day. The earliest you can book is the next day.
Check the latest rules at the source
Parking and highway rules change, so confirm your street's arrangements on the council's own pages before moving day.

Chelmsford removals — straight answers
Common questions on local moves, pricing and how Movesmith works.
How much is a man and van in Chelmsford?
Our engine priced a 3-seater sofa from CM1 to CM2 at £120, fixed. Bigger loads, stairs and a longer carry change the figure, and you see yours before you book.
Can I book fixed-price removals in Chelmsford?
Yes. Enter both addresses, what is moving and the access at each end, and the quote shows one fixed price for your date. The earliest you can book is the next day.
Can I get a parking suspension for moving day in Chelmsford?
You can apply to the South Essex Parking Partnership to suspend bays. It needs at least 15 working days' notice, the fee is paid in advance, and the council says it cannot promise the space will be clear. If that is too slow, tell us the nearest lawful stopping point and the carry instead.
Are there moving teams near Chelmsford?
Approved moving operators are based within about 20 miles of Chelmsford; the count on this page comes from our records. We check for a suitable vetted team for your date before you book, and your team is confirmed once they accept.
Can you move me from Chelmsford to Colchester, Basildon or London?
Yes. This page shows example fixed prices for a 1-bed flat from Chelmsford to Basildon, Colchester and Stratford in east London. For your own move, enter both addresses and the drive is inside the fixed figure.
Are the moving operators for Chelmsford moves verified?
Yes. Movesmith checks identity, Goods in Transit and Public Liability documents, records the declared vehicle type and requires a vehicle-compliance declaration before an operator takes bookings. We do not claim to physically inspect vehicles.
What if something is damaged?
Movesmith shows the applicable liability terms before you book. Your declared goods value helps us match the move with a suitable verified moving operator. Report from your booking page within 7 days of completion — including damage you couldn't reasonably spot at delivery.
What parking and access details do I need to provide?
Tell us separately about pickup and delivery: choose where the van can park lawfully, then give the carry distance, floor, lift, stairs and any awkward access. A private driveway or unrestricted street selection is enough by itself. For permit-controlled, paid or loading-bay parking, also give who is arranging it, whether it is confirmed, its operating window and the exact lawful position. Unknown or unsupported access is reviewed before we offer a fixed price, and a carry of 50 metres or more needs a tailored review. Do not enter gate codes, passwords or access credentials in the booking.
What happens if parking or access is different on moving day?
If there is no lawful parking, furniture does not fit, access is unsafe, unplanned dismantling is needed or delivery cannot be completed, the operator pauses the affected work and sends Movesmith a structured report with evidence. The operator cannot invent a charge or take cash at the door. Movesmith reviews the facts and, if the job needs to change, sends you a fixed proposal. Extra work or payment happens only after you expressly approve it; if you reject it, there is no variation charge and Ops arranges the safe next step, rebooking or a fresh quote.
