Moving home in Derby
Derby is a cathedral city on the River Derwent in Derbyshire, in the East Midlands. It became a city in 1977, and around 261,400 people lived there in 2021.
The centre is circled by an inner ring road, finished in 2010. Beyond it, the city spreads out to suburbs such as Allestree, Darley Abbey, Littleover, Mickleover, Chaddesden, Spondon, Alvaston and Chellaston. The north of the city takes in the southern end of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
Derby is on the Midland Main Line, with the M1 to the east and East Midlands Airport nearby. Moving a short way out, to Nottingham, Burton upon Trent or up the Derwent valley to Belper? The prices for those three moves are further down this page.

Moving-day access in Derby
Parking and highway rules change, so each note links to the official page it was checked against.
Resident-only zones and visitor permits
Derby has resident-only parking zones. Residents can buy visitor permits, up to 40 a month, each lasting one day and only valid in the zone printed on it. Activate a digital one for the right date and time, and ask the council whether it can cover the van.

Derby City Council enforces no-entry signs, banned turns, school streets and yellow box junctions with cameras. New camera sites get warning notices for first offences during their first 6 months.

The council uses CCTV to enforce bus lanes and bus stop clearways. Buses, coaches, minibuses and hackney carriages may use bus lanes, so a removal van must keep out of them and must not stop at a bus stop.

Only skip companies can apply for a skip permit in Derby, and the council needs at least 3 working days' notice. A permit lasts 28 days. Skips go in resident or meter bays only when there is nowhere else, and a skip on your own land needs no permit.

Before you move in Derby
Camera-enforced turns and no-entry points
Derby uses cameras to catch banned turns, no-entry breaches and yellow box stops at several spots, including Friar Gate and Uttoxeter Road. Give us both addresses and the route is planned on roads a van may use.
Bus lanes are not for vans
Vans are not on the list of vehicles allowed in Derby's bus lanes, and the council enforces bus lanes and bus stop clearways by camera. A pickup on a main road needs a stopping point clear of both.
Terraces and permit zones
Some older terraced streets near the centre are narrow, and some sit in resident-only zones. Say how close a van can stop and how far the carry is, and both are in the fixed figure.
Picking your date
Choose the date in the quote and the price is for that day. You see it before you pay anything.
Check the latest rules at the source
Parking and highway rules change, so confirm your street's arrangements on the council's own pages before moving day.

Derby removals — straight answers
Common questions on local moves, pricing and how Movesmith works.
How much does a removal in Derby cost?
Our engine priced a 1-bed flat from DE22 to DE23 at £365 and a 2-bed flat at £660, fixed. More rooms, more stairs or a longer walk from the van change the figure, and you see your own before you book.
Can I book fixed-price removals in Derby?
Yes. Enter both Derby addresses, your rooms and the access at each end, and the quote shows one fixed price. Choose the date in the quote and the price is for that day.
Where can a removal van park in Derby?
On an open street, outside the house. In a resident-only zone, residents can buy one-day visitor permits, so check with Derby City Council whether one covers the van. Keep clear of bus lanes and bus stop clearways, which the council watches by CCTV.
Are there moving teams near Derby?
We don't have many movers based in Derby yet. Your job goes to approved movers based nearby and to movers further away who choose to travel for it. We save your card when you book. We take nothing until a mover accepts. If no mover accepts, you pay nothing and we tell you straight away. You can then pick another date or cancel.
When is my card charged?
Nothing is taken when you book. Once a mover accepts, we hold the price about 48 hours before your move, or straight away if your move is sooner. Normally we take the payment after the move is done.
Can you move me from Derby to Nottingham, Burton or Belper?
Yes. The routes on this page price a 1-bed flat from Derby to Nottingham city centre, Burton upon Trent and Belper. For your own move, enter both addresses and the drive is part of the fixed figure. Derby has no charging Clean Air Zone.
Are the moving operators for Derby moves verified?
Yes. Movesmith checks identity, Goods in Transit and Public Liability documents, records the declared vehicle type and requires a vehicle-compliance declaration before an operator takes bookings. We do not claim to physically inspect vehicles.
What if something is damaged?
Movesmith shows the applicable liability terms before you book. Your declared goods value helps us match the move with a suitable verified moving operator. Report from your booking page within 7 days of completion — including damage you couldn't reasonably spot at delivery.
What parking and access details do I need to provide?
Tell us separately about pickup and delivery: choose where the van can park lawfully, then give the carry distance, floor, lift, stairs and any awkward access. A private driveway or unrestricted street selection is enough by itself. For permit-controlled, paid or loading-bay parking, also give who is arranging it, whether it is confirmed, its operating window and the exact lawful position. Unknown or unsupported access is reviewed before we offer a fixed price, and a carry of 50 metres or more needs a tailored review. Do not enter gate codes, passwords or access credentials in the booking.
What happens if parking or access is different on moving day?
If there is no lawful parking, furniture does not fit, access is unsafe, unplanned dismantling is needed or delivery cannot be completed, the operator pauses the affected work and sends Movesmith a structured report with evidence. The operator cannot invent a charge or take cash at the door. Movesmith reviews the facts and, if the job needs to change, sends you a fixed proposal. Extra work or payment happens only after you expressly approve it; if you reject it, there is no variation charge and Ops arranges the safe next step, rebooking or a fresh quote.
How much is a man and van in Derby?
Small loads and single items start from £100, fixed. You see the exact price for your Derby move before you book — no hourly meter, and the price stays fixed while the move matches the inventory, route and access you confirmed.
