Moving house in York, inside and outside the walls
York sits where the Ouse and the Foss meet, about 22 miles from both Leeds and Harrogate. The City of York had around 202,800 residents in 2021, spread from the old centre out to suburbs such as Acomb, Clifton, Heworth, Fulford and Huntington.
The medieval city walls still ring much of the centre, with four main gateways, called bars: Bootham, Monk, Walmgate and Micklegate. Homes on the narrow streets behind them are lovely to live in and harder to load at. Planning where the van stops matters more here than in most places.
Outside the walls, most of York is suburbs, where a van can often stop on the street. Main roads out of the city include the A64 and the A1237 ring road. Prices for moves to Leeds, Selby and Harrogate are further down this page.

- York to Harrogate: a 1-bed flat for £400, about 35 minutes' drive (21 miles).

Parking and highway rules change, so each note links to the official page it was checked against.
The footstreets close to traffic at 10.30am
City of York Council keeps vehicles out of the central footstreets between 10.30am and 5pm, 7 days a week. Shambles and Stonegate are closed to general traffic at all times and protected by bollards.

If a van must enter during those hours, you apply for city centre vehicle access at least 5 working days before. The approval comes by email and should be shown in the vehicle. The council charges an admin fee per vehicle, per day, and you need a separate application for each address.

York can suspend parking for a set time if you apply online at least 21 days ahead, with a plan showing where the suspension starts and ends. Neighbours need a letter drop, no-waiting cones must be on the street, and there is a charge.

In York's resident parking zones, a vehicle without a permit can usually wait for only about 10 minutes, as shown on the zone signs. Residents can buy visitor permits, so ask about one for moving day.

Before you move in York
Plan around footstreet hours
Much of the centre is closed to most vehicles from 10.30am to 5pm every day. If you live on or near them, loading before 10.30am or after 5pm keeps the van clear of the closure. Tell us your street and the plan takes it into account.
Old streets, tight corners
Inside the walls, some lanes are narrow and some are closed to traffic at all times. Say how close a van can get and how far the carry is, and the plan uses a van that fits with the walk priced in.
Moving a whole house in one go
A 3-bed semi in Acomb or Huntington needs a bigger van and crew than a flat by the river. List every room, the loft and the shed, and the plan and price cover all of it.
Choosing your day
Choose the date in the quote and the price is for that day. You see it before you pay anything.
Check the latest rules at the source
Parking and highway rules change, so confirm your street's arrangements on the council's own pages before moving day.

York removals — straight answers
Common questions on local moves, pricing and how Movesmith works.
How much do house removals in York cost?
Our engine priced a 1-bed flat from YO24 to YO31 at £370 and a 2-bed flat at £685, fixed. A bigger house, more stairs or a long walk from the van changes the figure, and you see your own before you book.
Can I book fixed-price removals in York?
Yes. Enter both York addresses, your rooms and the access at each end, and the quote shows one fixed price. Choose the date in the quote and the price is for that day.
Can I reserve parking for a removal van in York?
Yes. City of York Council can suspend parking if you apply at least 21 days ahead with a plan of the area, and there is a charge. In the footstreets you need city centre vehicle access instead, applied for at least 5 working days before.
Are there moving teams near York?
We don't have many movers based in York yet. Your job goes to approved movers based nearby and to movers further away who choose to travel for it. We save your card when you book. We take nothing until a mover accepts. If no mover accepts, you pay nothing and we tell you straight away. You can then pick another date or cancel.
When is my card charged?
Nothing is taken when you book. Once a mover accepts, we hold the price about 48 hours before your move, or straight away if your move is sooner. Normally we take the payment after the move is done.
Can you move me from York to Leeds, Harrogate or Selby?
Yes. The routes on this page price a 1-bed flat from York to Harrogate, to Headingley in Leeds and to Selby. For your own move, enter both addresses and the drive is part of the fixed figure.
Are the moving operators for York moves verified?
Yes. Movesmith checks identity, Goods in Transit and Public Liability documents, records the declared vehicle type and requires a vehicle-compliance declaration before an operator takes bookings. We do not claim to physically inspect vehicles.
What if something is damaged?
Movesmith shows the applicable liability terms before you book. Your declared goods value helps us match the move with a suitable verified moving operator. Report from your booking page within 7 days of completion — including damage you couldn't reasonably spot at delivery.
What parking and access details do I need to provide?
Tell us separately about pickup and delivery: choose where the van can park lawfully, then give the carry distance, floor, lift, stairs and any awkward access. A private driveway or unrestricted street selection is enough by itself. For permit-controlled, paid or loading-bay parking, also give who is arranging it, whether it is confirmed, its operating window and the exact lawful position. Unknown or unsupported access is reviewed before we offer a fixed price, and a carry of 50 metres or more needs a tailored review. Do not enter gate codes, passwords or access credentials in the booking.
What happens if parking or access is different on moving day?
If there is no lawful parking, furniture does not fit, access is unsafe, unplanned dismantling is needed or delivery cannot be completed, the operator pauses the affected work and sends Movesmith a structured report with evidence. The operator cannot invent a charge or take cash at the door. Movesmith reviews the facts and, if the job needs to change, sends you a fixed proposal. Extra work or payment happens only after you expressly approve it; if you reject it, there is no variation charge and Ops arranges the safe next step, rebooking or a fresh quote.
How much is a man and van in York?
Small loads and single items start from £100, fixed. You see the exact price for your York move before you book — no hourly meter, and the price stays fixed while the move matches the inventory, route and access you confirmed.
