What is Movesmith? Movesmith is a removals booking platform where customers across the UK can submit move details and receive a fixed price; booking proceeds after suitable local or route-based operator capacity is confirmed.

Moving home in Oxford

Oxford is about 56 miles north-west of London, where the Thames, known here as the Isis, meets the River Cherwell. A ring road runs around the city, and the A34, A40 and M40 carry most traffic in and out.

The city's homes spread well beyond the colleges. East Oxford, Cowley, Blackbird Leys and Littlemore are in OX4. Headington and Marston are in OX3. Summertown, Jericho and Botley are in OX2, and the centre and south of the city are in OX1.

Roughly 3 in 10 people in the city are aged 18 to 29, largely because of its students, so the start and end of the academic year can be busy times to move. Book early if your date falls then.

The national table starts single items from £100. For a whole home, our engine priced a 1-bed flat at £365 and a 2-bed flat at £675 from OX4 (Cowley and East Oxford) to OX3 (Headington and Marston). A 3-seater sofa on the same trip came to £135. Your own price follows your addresses, access and date.

Three routes out of Oxford

  • Oxford to Abingdon: a 1-bed flat for £370, about 15 minutes' drive (7 miles).
  • Oxford to Witney: a 1-bed flat for £390, about 30 minutes' drive (17 miles).
  • Oxford to Bicester: a 1-bed flat for £390, about 25 minutes' drive (18 miles).

Any road, toll or crossing charge on a route, such as a river crossing or a clean air zone charge for a van that doesn't meet the standard, is shown in your quote as its own line. The earliest you can book is the next day.

The price you see is the price you pay, as long as your move matches what you told us. Our pricing engine works it out from your addresses, your items and your date.

Moving-day access in Oxford

Parking and highway rules change, so each note links to the official page it was checked against.

  • The zero emission zone in the city centre

Oxfordshire County Council runs a pilot zero emission zone in a small part of the city centre, from 7am to 7pm every day. Petrol and diesel vehicles, vans included, pay a daily charge unless they have a discount or exemption. Fully electric vans don't pay. Any charge is shown as its own line in the quote.

  • The wider zone is a proposal for now

A larger zero emission zone has been proposed, but the council says it still depends on assessments, modelling and a formal public consultation. It is not in force. We will update this page if that changes.

  • Traffic filters do not stop vans

A trial of 6 traffic filters started on 28 September 2026, replacing the temporary congestion charge at the same points. They are at Hollow Way, Marston Ferry Road, St Clement's Street, St Cross Road, Hythe Bridge Street and Thames Street. Only cars and motorhomes are restricted. Vans and lorries can drive through at any time.

  • Suspending bays for removals

The county council suspends parking bays for furniture removals, up to 2 bays. Apply online through the parking permit website and give at least 10 working days' notice. Warning notices go up before the day, but the council says it cannot promise the space stays clear, and there is a charge.

  • Skips need a licence from the skip company

A skip on an Oxfordshire road needs a licence, and it is the skip company that applies, not the householder. Allow 5 working days for a new licence. There is a fee, set by the council.

Before you move in Oxford

  • Permit-only streets

Much of Oxford sits in controlled parking zones, where cars may only park in marked bays and the rest of the kerb has yellow lines. If you live in one, say so in the quote, and sort out the space for the van before the day.

  • Streets lined with parked cars

If your road in Jericho, Summertown or East Oxford is full of parked cars, the van may have to stop further along. Tell us the distance so the plan allows for the longer carry.

  • Term-time demand

With so many students in the city, the weeks around the start and end of term are busy on the roads and for movers. A date away from those weeks can be easier to fit.

  • Picking your date

Choose the date in the quote and the price is for that day. Change the date and the price updates before you book.

Oxford removals — straight answers

Common questions on local moves, pricing and how Movesmith works.

How much does a removal in Oxford cost?

Our engine priced a 1-bed flat from OX4 to OX3 at £365 and a 2-bed flat at £675, fixed. A bigger home, more floors or a longer carry costs more, and any zero emission zone charge shows on its own line. You see your own price before you book.

Can I book fixed-price removals in Oxford?

Yes. Enter both addresses, your rooms and the access at each end, and the quote shows one fixed price for your date. Choose the date in the quote and the price is for that day.

Can I reserve parking for a removals van in Oxford?

Yes. Oxfordshire County Council can suspend up to 2 bays for furniture removals if you apply online at least 10 working days ahead, and there is a charge. In a controlled parking zone, the rest of the kerb is usually yellow lines, so a suspended bay is often the simplest option.

Are there moving teams near Oxford?

We don't have many movers based in Oxford yet. Your job goes to approved movers based nearby and to movers further away who choose to travel for it. We save your card when you book. We take nothing until a mover accepts. If no mover accepts, you pay nothing and we tell you straight away. You can then pick another date or cancel.

When is my card charged?

Nothing is taken when you book. Once a mover accepts, we hold the price about 48 hours before your move, or straight away if your move is sooner. Normally we take the payment after the move is done.

Can you move me from Oxford to Abingdon, Witney or Bicester?

Yes. The routes on this page price a 1-bed flat from Oxford to Abingdon (OX14), Witney (OX28) and Bicester (OX26). For your own move, enter both addresses and the drive is part of the fixed figure, with any road charge on its own line.

Are the moving operators for Oxford moves verified?

Yes. Movesmith checks identity, Goods in Transit and Public Liability documents, records the declared vehicle type and requires a vehicle-compliance declaration before an operator takes bookings. We do not claim to physically inspect vehicles.

What if something is damaged?

Movesmith shows the applicable liability terms before you book. Your declared goods value helps us match the move with a suitable verified moving operator. Report from your booking page within 7 days of completion — including damage you couldn't reasonably spot at delivery.

What parking and access details do I need to provide?

Tell us separately about pickup and delivery: choose where the van can park lawfully, then give the carry distance, floor, lift, stairs and any awkward access. A private driveway or unrestricted street selection is enough by itself. For permit-controlled, paid or loading-bay parking, also give who is arranging it, whether it is confirmed, its operating window and the exact lawful position. Unknown or unsupported access is reviewed before we offer a fixed price, and a carry of 50 metres or more needs a tailored review. Do not enter gate codes, passwords or access credentials in the booking.

What happens if parking or access is different on moving day?

If there is no lawful parking, furniture does not fit, access is unsafe, unplanned dismantling is needed or delivery cannot be completed, the operator pauses the affected work and sends Movesmith a structured report with evidence. The operator cannot invent a charge or take cash at the door. Movesmith reviews the facts and, if the job needs to change, sends you a fixed proposal. Extra work or payment happens only after you expressly approve it; if you reject it, there is no variation charge and Ops arranges the safe next step, rebooking or a fresh quote.

How much is a man and van in Oxford?

Small loads and single items start from £100, fixed. You see the exact price for your Oxford move before you book — no hourly meter, and the price stays fixed while the move matches the inventory, route and access you confirmed.
