Moving home in Swindon

Swindon is the largest town in Wiltshire, with about 225,000 people in its built-up area at the 2021 census. It sits roughly 71 miles west of London and 36 miles east of Bristol.

The town has two halves. The original market town sat on top of a limestone hill, now called Old Town. The railway town grew at the bottom of the hill after the Great Western Railway arrived in the 1840s, and the two joined as one town in 1900.

Newer homes ring the edge of town: Priory Vale and Haydon Wick to the north, West Swindon to the west, and Wichelstowe to the south, a planned suburb of up to 4,500 homes between the M4 and the Old Town Railway Path. The M4 meets Swindon at junctions 15 and 16.

Three routes out of Swindon

  • Swindon to Cirencester: a 1-bed flat for £390, about 25 minutes' drive (20 miles).
  • Swindon to Chippenham: a 1-bed flat for £395, about 35 minutes' drive (23 miles).

Moving-day access in Swindon

Parking and highway rules change, so each note links to the official page it was checked against.

  • Suspending a bay outside your home

Swindon Borough Council lets you apply online to suspend a parking bay for furniture removals. Give at least 28 working days' notice. The council puts up warning notices before the day, but it says it cannot promise other drivers will keep the space clear, and there is a charge.

  • Resident parking zones

Swindon has resident parking zones lettered A to N, plus a central zone and an Old Town central zone. The council's map shows the outline of each zone but not every street, so check yours before moving day.

  • Skips on the road

A skip on a Swindon road needs written approval from the council as highway authority. The skip company applies, with at least 5 clear working days' notice, and a licence is normally for no more than 21 days. A full skip must go within 2 working days.

  • No Clean Air Zone in Swindon

Swindon is not on the government's list of Clean Air Zones. Bristol is, and its zone charges vans that do not meet the standard. If your move ends in central Bristol, any charge on the route is shown as its own line in the quote.

Before you move in Swindon

  • Up the hill to Old Town

Old Town is on top of the hill, and the railway town is at the bottom. If you are moving between the two, mention any steps up to the front door or a sloping drive, because a steep carry takes longer than a flat one.

  • Through the Magic Roundabout

Near the County Ground, about half a mile east of the centre, five mini-roundabouts sit in a ring around one central loop. It links four busy roads, so if your move crosses the east side of town, allow a little extra time in your day.

  • Shared drives on newer estates

If your home in Priory Vale, Wichelstowe or West Swindon is on a shared drive or a parking court, tell us. When the van can't reach your door, the plan allows for a longer walk with each box.

  • Picking your date

Choose the date in the quote and the price is for that day. If that date doesn't suit, change it in the quote and the price updates before you book.

Parking and highway rules change, so confirm your street's arrangements on the council's own pages before moving day.

Swindon removals — straight answers

Common questions on local moves, pricing and how Movesmith works.

How much does a house removal in Swindon cost?

Our engine priced a 1-bed flat from SN1 to SN25 at £370 and a 2-bed flat at £690, fixed. A bigger house costs more, and so do long carries and steps. You see your own price before you book.

Can I book fixed-price removals in Swindon?

Yes. Enter both addresses, your rooms and the access at each end, and the quote shows one fixed price for your date. Choose the date in the quote and the price is for that day.

Can I reserve a parking space for the removal van in Swindon?

Yes, in a marked bay. Swindon Borough Council accepts online requests to suspend a bay for furniture removals, with at least 28 working days' notice, and there is a charge. Apply well before your moving date.

Are there moving teams near Swindon?

We don't have many movers based in Swindon yet. Your job goes to approved movers based nearby and to movers further away who choose to travel for it. We save your card when you book. We take nothing until a mover accepts. If no mover accepts, you pay nothing and we tell you straight away. You can then pick another date or cancel.

When is my card charged?

Nothing is taken when you book. Once a mover accepts, we hold the price about 48 hours before your move, or straight away if your move is sooner. Normally we take the payment after the move is done.

Can you move me from Swindon to Cirencester, Chippenham or Marlborough?

Yes. The routes on this page price a 1-bed flat from Swindon to Cirencester (GL7), Chippenham (SN15) and Marlborough (SN8). For your own move, enter both addresses and the drive is part of the fixed figure.

Are the moving operators for Swindon moves verified?

Yes. Movesmith checks identity, Goods in Transit and Public Liability documents, records the declared vehicle type and requires a vehicle-compliance declaration before an operator takes bookings. We do not claim to physically inspect vehicles.

What if something is damaged?

Movesmith shows the applicable liability terms before you book. Your declared goods value helps us match the move with a suitable verified moving operator. Report from your booking page within 7 days of completion — including damage you couldn't reasonably spot at delivery.

What parking and access details do I need to provide?

Tell us separately about pickup and delivery: choose where the van can park lawfully, then give the carry distance, floor, lift, stairs and any awkward access. A private driveway or unrestricted street selection is enough by itself. For permit-controlled, paid or loading-bay parking, also give who is arranging it, whether it is confirmed, its operating window and the exact lawful position. Unknown or unsupported access is reviewed before we offer a fixed price, and a carry of 50 metres or more needs a tailored review. Do not enter gate codes, passwords or access credentials in the booking.

What happens if parking or access is different on moving day?

If there is no lawful parking, furniture does not fit, access is unsafe, unplanned dismantling is needed or delivery cannot be completed, the operator pauses the affected work and sends Movesmith a structured report with evidence. The operator cannot invent a charge or take cash at the door. Movesmith reviews the facts and, if the job needs to change, sends you a fixed proposal. Extra work or payment happens only after you expressly approve it; if you reject it, there is no variation charge and Ops arranges the safe next step, rebooking or a fresh quote.

How much is a man and van in Swindon?

Small loads and single items start from £100, fixed. You see the exact price for your Swindon move before you book — no hourly meter, and the price stays fixed while the move matches the inventory, route and access you confirmed.
