What is Movesmith? Movesmith is a removals booking platform where customers across the UK can submit move details and receive a fixed price; booking proceeds after suitable local or route-based operator capacity is confirmed.

Moving home in Portsmouth: an island city

Portsmouth is the UK's only island city. Most of it sits on Portsea Island, a flat, low-lying island of about 9.5 square miles off the Hampshire coast, home to around 165,000 people in 2021. The whole city had about 208,100 residents that year, and it is the most densely populated city in the UK.

Only three roads join the island to the mainland: the M275 motorway, the A3 London Road and the A2030 Eastern Road. Every removal van going on or off the island uses one of them, so a move from Southsea to Cosham, or from Fratton out to Fareham, is planned around those crossings.

Not every part of the city is on the island. Cosham, in PO6, sits on the mainland below Portsdown Hill but inside the city boundary. Beyond the crossings, the M27, the A27 and the A3(M) link Portsmouth to Southampton, Chichester and the rest of the country.

Three routes out of Portsmouth

  • Portsmouth to Southampton: a 1-bed flat for £400, about 35 minutes' drive (22 miles).
  • Portsmouth to Chichester: a 1-bed flat for £385, about 25 minutes' drive (18 miles).
  • Portsmouth to Fareham: a 1-bed flat for £375, about 15 minutes' drive (11 miles).

Any road, toll or crossing charge on a route, such as a river crossing or a clean air zone charge for a van that doesn't meet the standard, is shown in your quote as its own line. The earliest you can book is the next day.

The price you see is the price you pay, as long as your move matches what you told us. Our pricing engine works it out from your addresses, your items and your date.

Moving-day access in Portsmouth

Parking and highway rules change, so each note links to the official page it was checked against.

  • A removal van is a reason to suspend bays

Portsmouth City Council lists a removal van for a house or office move as a reason for a parking suspension. Bays can be suspended in resident parking zones and in permit holder or pay and display bays. Suspensions are not arranged on yellow lines or in unrestricted parking.

  • Ask 7 working days ahead

Email the council's parking suspensions team with the address, the reason, the length of road (5 to 30 metres) and the dates. Give at least 7 working days' notice. Later requests may be turned down, and if accepted there is a short-notice fee. The council's current prices are on its own page.

  • Resident zones run all day, every day

Unless the signs say otherwise, Portsmouth's resident parking zones run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and visitors can usually park free for up to 2 hours. A move takes longer than that, so check your zone on the council's map before the day.

  • The Clean Air Zone does not charge vans

Portsmouth has a class B Clean Air Zone. It charges heavy goods vehicles, buses, coaches, taxis and private hire vehicles that do not meet the standard. Private cars and vans are not charged.

Before you move in Portsmouth

  • Packed streets, tight kerbs

Portsmouth fits a lot of homes onto one small island, so kerb space can be scarce. Tell the quote how near the door a van can stop and how long the walk is, and the crew and timing are planned for it.

  • Three ways on, three ways off

The M275, the A3 and the A2030 carry all road traffic to and from Portsea Island. Your drive between the two addresses is already inside the fixed figure, whichever crossing the route uses.

  • Island or mainland?

A Cosham address is in Portsmouth but not on the island. Give the full address and the quote works out the real route, so you do not need to know which side of the creek you are on.

  • Picking your day

Choose the date in the quote and the price is for that day. You can compare a few dates before you book.

Parking and highway rules change, so confirm your street's arrangements on the council's own pages before moving day.

Portsmouth removals — straight answers

Common questions on local moves, pricing and how Movesmith works.

How much does a removal in Portsmouth cost?

Our engine priced a 1-bed flat from PO4 in Southsea to PO6 in Cosham at £370, fixed, and a 3-seater sofa on the same route at £140. Stairs, the carry and your date change the figure, and you see your own before you book.

Can I book fixed-price removals in Portsmouth?

Yes. Enter both addresses, your rooms and the access at each end, and the quote shows one fixed price for the date you choose. Choose the date in the quote and the price is for that day.

Can I reserve parking for a removals van in Portsmouth?

Yes, in most controlled streets. Portsmouth City Council suspends bays in resident parking zones and in permit or pay and display bays for removals. Email the suspensions team at least 7 working days before the move. There may be a charge, and it is not possible on yellow lines.

Are there moving teams near Portsmouth?

We don't have many movers based in Portsmouth yet. Your job goes to approved movers based nearby and to movers further away who choose to travel for it. We save your card when you book. We take nothing until a mover accepts. If no mover accepts, you pay nothing and we tell you straight away. You can then pick another date or cancel.

When is my card charged?

Nothing is taken when you book. Once a mover accepts, we hold the price about 48 hours before your move, or straight away if your move is sooner. Normally we take the payment after the move is done.

Can you move me from Portsmouth to Southampton, Chichester or Fareham?

Yes. The routes on this page price a 1-bed flat from Portsmouth to Southampton, Chichester and Fareham. For your own move, enter both addresses and the drive is in the fixed figure, with any road charge on its own line.

Are the moving operators for Portsmouth moves verified?

Yes. Movesmith checks identity, Goods in Transit and Public Liability documents, records the declared vehicle type and requires a vehicle-compliance declaration before an operator takes bookings. We do not claim to physically inspect vehicles.

What if something is damaged?

Movesmith shows the applicable liability terms before you book. Your declared goods value helps us match the move with a suitable verified moving operator. Report from your booking page within 7 days of completion — including damage you couldn't reasonably spot at delivery.

What parking and access details do I need to provide?

Tell us separately about pickup and delivery: choose where the van can park lawfully, then give the carry distance, floor, lift, stairs and any awkward access. A private driveway or unrestricted street selection is enough by itself. For permit-controlled, paid or loading-bay parking, also give who is arranging it, whether it is confirmed, its operating window and the exact lawful position. Unknown or unsupported access is reviewed before we offer a fixed price, and a carry of 50 metres or more needs a tailored review. Do not enter gate codes, passwords or access credentials in the booking.

What happens if parking or access is different on moving day?

If there is no lawful parking, furniture does not fit, access is unsafe, unplanned dismantling is needed or delivery cannot be completed, the operator pauses the affected work and sends Movesmith a structured report with evidence. The operator cannot invent a charge or take cash at the door. Movesmith reviews the facts and, if the job needs to change, sends you a fixed proposal. Extra work or payment happens only after you expressly approve it; if you reject it, there is no variation charge and Ops arranges the safe next step, rebooking or a fresh quote.

How much is a man and van in Portsmouth?

Small loads and single items start from £100, fixed. You see the exact price for your Portsmouth move before you book — no hourly meter, and the price stays fixed while the move matches the inventory, route and access you confirmed.
