Moving home in Bournemouth

Bournemouth is a seaside town in Dorset, about 94 miles south-west of London. Poole lies to the west and Christchurch to the east, and since April 2019 all three have shared one council, BCP Council. Around 196,000 people lived in the built-up area in 2021.

The town is known for a 7-mile stretch of sandy beach backed by cliffs. Near the sea, the East Cliff and West Cliff (BH1 and BH2) have many blocks of flats, so a move there often starts with a lift, a shared hallway and a car park that belongs to the block.

Further inland, Boscombe, Southbourne, Winton, Kinson and Westbourne are mostly streets of houses. A common Bournemouth move goes from a flat by the sea to a house a mile or two north, or over the boundary into Poole or Christchurch. The route prices below cover Poole, Christchurch and Southampton.

Prices include VAT and are for a typical home on a short local move, Monday to Thursday mid-month. Your price depends on your items, access and date. Your exact price is fixed before you book, and any toll or crossing charges on your route are shown as their own line — never added afterwards.

Single items start from £100 in the national table. For a whole home, our engine priced a 1-bed flat at £360 and a 2-bed flat at £655 from BH1, by the East Cliff and the town centre, to BH8, around the railway station (a 3-seater sofa on the same run came to £130). Your own price follows your addresses, the access at each end and your date.

Three routes out of Bournemouth

  • Bournemouth to Poole: a 1-bed flat for £375, about 15 minutes' drive (7 miles).
  • Bournemouth to Christchurch: a 1-bed flat for £370, about 15 minutes' drive (7 miles).
  • Bournemouth to Southampton: a 1-bed flat for £405, about 40 minutes' drive (31 miles).

Any road, toll or crossing charge on a route, such as a river crossing or a clean air zone charge for a van that doesn't meet the standard, is shown in your quote as its own line. The earliest you can book is the next day.

The price you see is the price you pay, as long as your move matches what you told us. Our pricing engine works it out from your addresses, your items and your date.

Who will do your move

We don't have many movers based in Bournemouth yet. Your job goes to approved movers based nearby and to movers further away who choose to travel for it.

We save your card when you book. We take nothing until a mover accepts.

If no mover accepts, you pay nothing and we tell you straight away. You can then pick another date or cancel.

Moving-day access in Bournemouth

Parking and highway rules change, so each note links to the official page it was checked against.

  • Permission for the van to park

BCP Council says a commercial vehicle that needs to park in a restricted area for a job needs a parking dispensation. Apply online at least 3 days before the move. There is a charge, and a dispensation lasts up to 2 weeks at a time.

  • Resident permit zones

Bournemouth has 11 resident permit zones, each listing its own streets. Only 1 vehicle can be active on a visitor permit at a time, and a hire vehicle can be added to a resident's permit for up to 1 week without paperwork.

  • Seafront roads charge on Sundays

Some on-street parking near the sea charges every day. On East Overcliff Drive, charges apply from 9am to 8pm, Monday to Sunday, paid by card, phone or app.

  • No Clean Air Zone charge

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are not on the government's list of Clean Air Zones in England, so a van does not pay an emissions charge to drive in.

  • Skips need a council licence

If you are clearing out before the move, a skip on the road needs a BCP Council skip licence, and only a registered skip operator can apply. Your skip firm arranges it, and there is a weekly charge.

Before you move in Bournemouth

  • Lifts in clifftop blocks

Tell us if your block has a lift, roughly how big it is and whether it can be booked. A wardrobe or sofa that will not fit in the lift goes down the stairs, and then the floor number matters. If the lift is out of action on the day, let us know before the move.

  • Block car parks, gates and barriers

Many blocks of flats have a private car park behind a barrier or a gate with a code. Ask your managing agent whether a removals van may use it, and add the code and any height limit to your notes.

  • A flat by the sea to a house inland

Moving up from a flat usually means more rooms at the new end and a different carry at each address. List the rooms at both, and the plan uses a van and crew that suit the whole job.

  • Leaving the BCP area

Poole and Christchurch share a council with Bournemouth, so the same parking rules and forms apply. Southampton has its own city council and its own rules, so check the parking at that end separately.

  • When you can move

Choose the date in the quote and the price is for that day. If your dates are flexible, try a few and compare before you book.

Parking and highway rules change, so confirm your street's arrangements on the council's own pages before moving day.

Bournemouth removals — straight answers

Common questions on local moves, pricing and how Movesmith works.

How much does a removal in Bournemouth cost?

Our engine priced a 1-bed flat from BH1 to BH8 at £360 and a 2-bed flat at £655, fixed. The size of your home, the floor, whether there is a lift, the carry and the date all shape your own price, which you see before you book.

Can I book fixed-price removals in Bournemouth?

Yes. Enter both addresses, the rooms and the access at each end, including any lift, and the quote shows one fixed price for your date.

Can I get permission for a removals van to park in Bournemouth?

BCP Council issues parking dispensations to commercial vehicles that need to park in a restricted area for a job. Apply online at least 3 days ahead. There is a charge, and a dispensation lasts up to 2 weeks.

Are there moving teams near Bournemouth?

We don't have many movers based in Bournemouth yet. Your job goes to approved movers based nearby and to movers further away who choose to travel for it. We save your card when you book. We take nothing until a mover accepts. If no mover accepts, you pay nothing and we tell you straight away. You can then pick another date or cancel.

When is my card charged?

Nothing is taken when you book. Once a mover accepts, we hold the price about 48 hours before your move, or straight away if your move is sooner. Normally we take the payment after the move is done.

Can you move me from Bournemouth to Poole, Christchurch or Southampton?

Yes. The routes on this page price a 1-bed flat from Bournemouth to Poole, Christchurch and Southampton. For your own move, enter both addresses and the drive is included in the fixed figure.

Are the moving operators for Bournemouth moves verified?

Yes. Movesmith checks identity, Goods in Transit and Public Liability documents, records the declared vehicle type and requires a vehicle-compliance declaration before an operator takes bookings. We do not claim to physically inspect vehicles.

What if something is damaged?

Movesmith shows the applicable liability terms before you book. Your declared goods value helps us match the move with a suitable verified moving operator. Report from your booking page within 7 days of completion — including damage you couldn't reasonably spot at delivery.

What parking and access details do I need to provide?

Tell us separately about pickup and delivery: choose where the van can park lawfully, then give the carry distance, floor, lift, stairs and any awkward access. A private driveway or unrestricted street selection is enough by itself. For permit-controlled, paid or loading-bay parking, also give who is arranging it, whether it is confirmed, its operating window and the exact lawful position. Unknown or unsupported access is reviewed before we offer a fixed price, and a carry of 50 metres or more needs a tailored review. Do not enter gate codes, passwords or access credentials in the booking.

What happens if parking or access is different on moving day?

If there is no lawful parking, furniture does not fit, access is unsafe, unplanned dismantling is needed or delivery cannot be completed, the operator pauses the affected work and sends Movesmith a structured report with evidence. The operator cannot invent a charge or take cash at the door. Movesmith reviews the facts and, if the job needs to change, sends you a fixed proposal. Extra work or payment happens only after you expressly approve it; if you reject it, there is no variation charge and Ops arranges the safe next step, rebooking or a fresh quote.

How much is a man and van in Bournemouth?

Small loads and single items start from £100, fixed. You see the exact price for your Bournemouth move before you book — no hourly meter, and the price stays fixed while the move matches the inventory, route and access you confirmed.
