Moving-day essentials including keys, phone, documents, charger, water, folded blankets and sealed boxes beside a front door

A good moving-day checklist covers more than boxes. It confirms the access, contacts, timing and essentials that keep the move workable, and it gives you a clear next step if something changes. Use this checklist in the final 48 hours.

The short version

  • Recheck both addresses, the inventory, access and contact people 48 hours before the move.
  • Keep keys, documents, medicines, phones, chargers and valuables with you.
  • Clear the route through both properties and confirm destination access.
  • Report material inventory, address, access or timing changes before the move begins.
  • Use the booking confirmation page or current Movesmith support route for changes.

48 hours before the move

Review the booking details from beginning to end:

  • Pickup and delivery addresses
  • Date and expected timing
  • Inventory and any large or fragile items
  • Floors, stairs, lifts and carrying distance
  • Parking, permits and loading arrangements
  • Building contacts, keys, fobs and access codes
  • The name and number of the person attending at each end

If any detail is wrong or incomplete, use the booking or current support route straight away.

The evening before

Finish packing the items you are responsible for and make sure every box can be lifted safely. Close and label boxes clearly by room or destination.

  • Keys and access fobs
  • Identification and important documents
  • Medicines and personal essentials
  • Phones, chargers and power banks
  • Valuables and prohibited items
  • Water, snacks and basic cleaning supplies

Charge your phone and confirm that the contact numbers on the booking are current.

Prepare the property

Clear the route through the home. Remove trip hazards and keep children and pets away from loading areas.

If permitted by the building, protect vulnerable floors or corners and make sure communal doors can be used without creating a security risk.

At the destination, confirm that you can enter at the planned time. A completed pickup does not help if the new keys are delayed.

Before the arrival window

  • Check every cupboard, loft, shed, balcony and storage area
  • Separate items that are staying
  • Keep your essentials bag with you
  • Unlock gates and prepare access
  • Have the destination contact ready
  • Photograph meter readings or property condition if relevant to your handover

Keep these with you

Do not pack the keys, documents or phone you need during the move.

If the inventory changes

If you add or remove a material amount of furniture, boxes or equipment, report it before the team begins. The vehicle, crew, timing or scope may need to be reviewed.

Avoid relying on an informal arrangement that is not reflected in the booking.

If the address, access or timing changes

  • An address changes
  • Keys will not be available on time
  • A lift or loading bay is no longer available
  • Parking restrictions change
  • The agreed timing no longer works
  • Nobody can attend at one end

Use the Movesmith route shown in the booking or the current support information. Keep a record of the update and any agreed next step.

If you need to reschedule or cancel

Check the current policy and contact route rather than relying on an old screenshot or social post. Notice periods, fees and available options must come from the policy that applies to the booking.

Current support route

General enquiries: call 020 3143 1719 Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm, UK time, or email hello@movesmith.uk. For urgent issues with a booked move, call the same landline outside these hours, including weekends. Current cancellation and rescheduling terms are on the Movesmith cancellation page.

Final five-minute check

  • Are both addresses and contacts correct?
  • Is the inventory still accurate?
  • Is the route clear?
  • Are parking, lifts and keys ready?
  • Are the essentials staying with me?
  • Have I reported every material change?

Preparation cannot prevent every surprise, but it makes the next step much clearer when plans change.
