Moving into or out of self-storage: a practical checklist
Check the facility, the unit-to-van route and the home address before moving belongings into or out of self-storage.

A self-storage move has three important points: the property, the storage unit and the route between them. The drive may be straightforward, but the move can slow down if the unit is difficult to reach, the lift is booked or the van cannot enter the loading area. Check these details before the day.

1. Confirm the direction and handover point
Be clear about where the move starts and ends. Is everything already inside the unit, or must it first be collected from a home? Is the delivery going to one address or more than one?
If someone else will meet the moving team, confirm their name, contact details and authority to access the unit.
2. Check the facility hours
Reception hours and customer-access hours are not always the same. Ask when the gates, loading area and lifts are available, and whether the move needs to finish before a fixed closing time.
Allow time for signing in, finding the unit and returning any trolley or access equipment.
3. Walk the route from unit to van
- Which floor the unit is on
- Whether a suitable lift is available
- The distance from the unit to the loading point
- Steps, ramps, narrow corridors or fire doors
- Whether trolleys are available and where they may be used
If possible, walk the route yourself before move day.
4. Check vehicle and parking restrictions
Some facilities have height limits, timed loading areas or rules about where larger vehicles may stop. Ask whether a bay must be reserved and whether the driver needs a code or registration in advance.
Do the same check at the home address. A well-planned storage collection can still be delayed by unplanned access at the other end.
5. Inventory the contents
Do not estimate the move from the advertised unit size alone. Two units of the same size can contain very different volumes depending on how they were packed.
List the boxes, furniture, appliances and any heavy or fragile items. Note anything positioned behind other contents that will take time to reach.
6. Prepare the unit
- Remove loose items from the floor
- Make sure boxes can be lifted safely
- Protect fragile items
- Separate anything that is not moving
- Have the lock, key or access code ready
Before delivery, check that the unit has enough clear space and that the facility allows the items you intend to store.
7. Keep storage and moving arrangements separate
The storage agreement is with the facility you choose. Confirm its terms, access rules, insurance arrangements and prohibited items directly with the facility.
