What is Movesmith? Movesmith is a removals booking platform where customers across the UK can submit move details and receive a fixed price, then book it straight away; a verified mover accepts the job, and if none does in time the customer pays nothing.
Reading: where the Kennet meets the Thames, and the Red Routes begin
Reading is a large Berkshire town where the River Kennet joins the Thames. It is a major business and retail centre, with The Oracle and Broad Street Mall at its heart, and its size means moves here come in every shape from city-centre flats to village houses.
Housing runs in rings from the centre: tall Victorian terraces in Redlands, Newtown and Katesgrove, 1930s semis in Southcote and Tilehurst, and larger family homes in Caversham on the north bank. Further out are Earley, Woodley and Lower Earley, whose estates have driveways but long crescents.
Reading has traffic rules that smaller towns do not: red routes on main roads, where stopping at all can bring a ticket. Moves to Wokingham, Newbury and Henley are quick and their prices are lower on this page.

Red route dispensations cover removals
Reading's own terms list removals as an essential activity that a Red Route dispensation can cover, where there is no suitable alternative place to park. Convenience is not a reason, and a request can be refused if legal parking is nearby.
Source: Reading Borough Council: parking permit terms and conditionsRed lines are exceptional
Stopping on single or double red lines is only allowed in exceptional cases, such as moving heavy or bulky items, and may need a site visit by the Council's team before it is approved.
Source: Reading Borough Council: parking permit terms and conditionsPlace, date and time are fixed
A dispensation only holds for the approved location, date and time, and it does not allow general parking or idling. If your van must move on, it must do so immediately when an officer asks, or a ticket can follow.

All dispensations are digital, with the vehicle registration used to check it. Changes or cancellations must reach the Council in writing at least 24 hours ahead, and the Council can revoke or refuse a dispensation at any time.

Before you move in Reading
Red routes on the main roads
Reading has red routes where stopping is not allowed. If your address is on one, a dispensation may be needed and the quote should know where the van will actually stop.
Crossing the Thames
Caversham is on the north bank and the bridges can queue at peak hours. Tell the quote if your move crosses the river, and avoid the school-run window when you can.
Tall terraces in the centre
Houses in Redlands and Newtown often have three floors and steep stairs. Add the floors to the quote so the number of movers and the time are right.
University tenancy dates
The University of Reading's tenancies end in summer and a crowd of student moves follows. Choose your date in the quote and compare a few days if you are flexible.
Check the latest rules at the source
Parking and highway rules change, so confirm your street's arrangements on the council's own pages before moving day.

Reading removals — straight answers
Common questions on local moves, pricing and how Movesmith works.
How much does a removal in Reading cost?
From RG1 to RG4 our engine priced a 1-bed flat at £230 and a 2-bed flat at £265. The floors, the Thames crossing and the date move the figure, and you see your fixed price before you book.
Can I book fixed-price removals in Reading?
Yes. Put in both addresses, what is going and the access at each end, and the quote gives one fixed price. Pick the date in the quote and the price holds for that day.
Do I need a dispensation for a removal van on a Reading red route?
Reading Borough Council lists removals as an essential activity a dispensation can cover, but only where there is no suitable alternative parking. It is digital, valid for one place, date and time, and the van must move if an officer asks.
Are there moving teams near Reading?
2 approved movers are based within about 20 miles of Reading. When you book, they can see your job and choose to take it. We save your card when you book. We take nothing until a mover accepts. If no mover accepts, you pay nothing and we tell you straight away.
When is my card charged?
Nothing is taken when you book. Once a mover accepts, we hold the price about 48 hours before your move, or straight away if your move is sooner. Normally we take the payment after the move is done.
Can you move me from Reading to Wokingham, Newbury or Henley-on-Thames?
Yes. The routes on this page price a 1-bed flat from Reading to Wokingham, to Newbury and to Henley-on-Thames. For your own move, both addresses go into the quote and the drive is in the fixed figure.
Are the moving operators for Reading moves verified?
Yes. Movesmith checks identity, Goods in Transit and Public Liability documents, records the declared vehicle type and requires a vehicle-compliance declaration before an operator takes bookings. We do not claim to physically inspect vehicles.
What if something is damaged?
Movesmith shows the applicable liability terms before you book. Your declared goods value helps us match the move with a suitable verified moving operator. Report from your booking page within 7 days of completion — including damage you couldn't reasonably spot at delivery.
What parking and access details do I need to provide?
Tell us about pickup and delivery: choose where the van can park lawfully, then give the carry distance, floor, lift, stairs and any awkward access. A private driveway or unrestricted street selection is enough. For permit-controlled, paid or loading-bay parking, also give who is arranging it, whether it is confirmed, its operating window and the exact lawful position. Unknown access, unsupported restrictions or a carry outside the online pricing limits needs a tailored review before we offer a fixed price. Do not enter gate codes, passwords or access credentials in the booking.
What happens if parking or access is different on moving day?
If there is no lawful parking, furniture does not fit, access is unsafe, unplanned dismantling is needed or delivery cannot be completed, the operator pauses the affected work and sends Movesmith a structured report with evidence. The operator cannot invent a charge or take cash at the door. Movesmith reviews the facts and, if the job needs to change, sends you a fixed proposal. Extra work or payment happens only after you expressly approve it; if you reject it, there is no variation charge and Ops arranges the safe next step, rebooking or a fresh quote.
How much is a man and van in Reading?
Small loads and single items start from £70, fixed. You see the exact price for your Reading move before you book — no hourly meter, and the price stays fixed while the move matches the inventory, route and access you confirmed.
