What shapes a piano move
Uprights vs grands
An upright is handled as one piece, wrapped and strapped on a piano trolley. Grand and baby grand pianos are different, so ask us first.
Stairs, doorways and landings
Floor level, stair turns, narrow doorways and tight landings are the biggest factors. Share photos of anything awkward and it's planned — and priced — before the day, not discovered on it.
Protection and settling
Pianos are wrapped and secured for transport. After a move, let a piano settle for a couple of weeks before you have it tuned — moving and the new room's climate both affect the tuning.
When to get a custom quote
Very heavy grands, upper-floor moves with no lift, or a piano that needs a window or hoist route are best handled via a quick custom quote so the right equipment and crew are confirmed.

Moving a piano in a London home
Mansion blocks and conversion flats
Many London pianos live up a shared staircase with a tight turn at every half-landing, or in a flat whose lift is too small for an upright. Tell us the floor, the number of flights and the lift size at both ends, and send photos of the narrowest point.
Basements and front steps
Victorian terraces often have steps up to the front door or down to a lower-ground flat. A few steps are routine; a steep external stair or a basement with a narrow turn needs planning, so mention it when you ask for a price.
Parking and loading
A piano can't be carried a long way down the street. Tell us where the van can stop lawfully at each address, and whether a permit, paid bay or loading bay is involved. A carry of 50 metres or more needs a tailored review.
Windows, hoists and other routes
If a piano came in through a window, or the stairs are simply too tight, it may need a hoist or another route. That is a job for a custom quote so the right equipment and crew are confirmed before the day.

Getting a piano ready to move
- Close and, if it locks, lock the lid, and take everything off the top of the piano.
- Measure the narrowest door, hallway and stair turn on the route, at both addresses.
- Photograph the piano and the route out; photos help our team plan and price accurately.
- Clear a wide path to the door, including rugs that could slide underfoot.
- Book any lift, parking bay or building access you need for the day.
- Please don't try to move it yourself first — pianos are heavy, top-heavy and easy to damage.
After the move
Settling it in
Let it settle
Give the piano around two weeks in its new room before you book a tuner. The move and the change in temperature and humidity both affect the tuning, so tuning straight away is often wasted.
Choose its spot with care
Away from radiators, fireplaces, air-conditioning vents and direct sun, and ideally against an inside wall. Steady conditions are kinder to the wood and the tuning.
Check it over
Look it over and play every key once it's placed. If anything is wrong, report it straight away with photos.

Upper floors with no lift are best confirmed via a quick custom quote.
What parking and access details matter for a piano move?
Tell us about pickup and delivery: choose where the van can park lawfully, then give the carry distance, floor, lift, stairs and any awkward access. A private driveway or unrestricted street selection is enough. For permit-controlled, paid or loading-bay parking, also give who is arranging it, whether it is confirmed, its operating window and the exact lawful position. Unknown access, unsupported restrictions or a carry outside the online pricing limits needs a tailored review before we offer a fixed price. Do not enter gate codes, passwords or access credentials in the booking.
What if the piano does not fit or access is unsafe?
If there is no lawful parking, furniture does not fit, access is unsafe, unplanned dismantling is needed or delivery cannot be completed, the operator pauses the affected work and sends Movesmith a structured report with evidence. The operator cannot invent a charge or take cash at the door. Movesmith reviews the facts and, if the job needs to change, sends you a fixed proposal. Extra work or payment happens only after you expressly approve it; if you reject it, there is no variation charge and Ops arranges the safe next step, rebooking or a fresh quote.
Do you tune the piano after moving it?
No — tuning isn't included, and it's better to wait anyway. Let the piano settle in its new room for around two weeks before booking a tuner, as both the move and the new room's temperature and humidity affect the tuning.
